Expectations from those within the Call of Duty community were high for this week’s patch, but it disappointed many, and even included a line, seemingly left in by mistake, that preempted the backlash. But that’s not all. A series of leaks from dataminers and other sources have given us a look at potential new maps and even a first glance at the upcoming battle pass – and Activision has issued copyright notices in a thankless bid to have them scrubbed from the internet. This week’s patch included a long list of bug fixes, as well as two new Special Operations, one new Classic Spec Ops mission with star ratings, the realism multiplayer moshpit, and the much-loved Gun Game mode. Call of Duty’s core players had hoped for more from the update, however. Current hot topics include the nature of the game’s skill-based matchmaking, spawn location, spawn camping and weapon balance.
epic removed skill based matchmaking…
The game looks at your performance during your multiplayer matches, then uses various statistics that it draws from your performance to place you into lobbies against opponents of similar skill. This is not a new concept for shooters, as Apex Legends and Fortnite also use some level of skill-based matchmaking as well. These statistics can include score per minute, win-loss ratio, or kill-death ratio.
Call of Duty has gone through a strange metamorphosis. So what happened? And should long-time fans of the franchise even bother with future titles? He made a convincing point about the repetition and ease of kills as a contributing factor in many veterans not enjoying Call of Duty. Basically kills have become so easily attainable with gun choice and tactics having less and less impact on the outcome of gunfights. This is all compounded by the poor connections, ineffective lag compensation, and skill based matchmaking that creates inconsistent game behavior.
So veterans feel that skill has been largely removed from the equation by allowing less skilled players more even footing through external and artificial manipulation of the game as well as by the dilution and lowering of the games accessibility.

Skill-based Matchmaking SBMM has, without a doubt, consistently been one of the most controversial topics in the Call of Duty community. Because answering SBMM-related questions could risk compromise the likely complex algorithms at work, Call of Duty developers rarely publicly comment on specifics. TheXclusiveAce and Drift0r pooled their efforts to play across six accounts in different skill brackets and record the data in a massive doc.
Each one alternated between three accounts; one on the low-end, another average, and one extremely competitive. To perform this test, both recorded the stats of the players they ran into, as well as the connection quality ping to the servers hosting these matches. To avoid the inconsistencies of the in-game ping tracker, the pair used Netduma routers to directly ping the host server.
Their findings were illuminating. First, neither have found any evidence that matchmaking assigns higher priority to player skill over ping to server. In all cases, players were arranged first based on connection, then on skill level. This dispels one common misconception about SBMM. The other major finding is the most interesting. Based on data across the six different accounts, the game appears to take player performance in the last five matches when matching them up with others in the sixth.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is having a tough week
As a whole skill-based matchmaking SBMM is a good thing. By design, it’s supposed to give you fun-but-challenging multiplayer experiences — not one or the other. Back in the old days, before matchmaking was a thing and when PC players were definitely, absolutely, assuredly going to boycott Modern Warfare 2 over it , you’d use a server browser to find a game, you’d jump in and you’d deal with the hand you were dealt. And if you joined a server where one side was all players rocking the same clan tag, you were usually in for a rough time.
These cats were pubstomping — or getting sweaty, as the kids say these days. They were using hardcore strats, taking things super serious and getting ready to wipe the floor with you.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Why Skill-Based Matchmaking is here to stay
Skill-based matchmaking seems to be the trend in top competitive games these days and it’s not always warmly received, especially when games like Modern Warfare lack a real ranked mode. Nadeshot took to Twitter to call out Call of Duty devs regarding matchmaking and ranking systems. He asked why devs go through so much hard work to implement skill-based matchmaking rather than implementing a ranking system. If you’re going to match me up against better players, why can’t I have a rank to be proud of and work towards?

The COVID global pandemic has led major sports leagues to cancel or postpone their seasons, and the world of esports has been impacted as well. One league that has adapted to the new challenges is the Call of Duty League. The current season is continuing, albeit with some significant changes. The change is dramatic—all on-site matches have been transitioned to an online format. The move has not been without its own set of challenges and new considerations under the strictly digital format.
To get an inside understanding of this transition, GameSpot spoke with various professional gamers, team owners, and casters to hear directly about this change.

Skill-based matchmaking SBMM , a system that aims at matching players of similar skill level within the same game, was implemented into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare The aim is to create a more balanced experience for everyone, as lower skilled players get separated and shielded from highly skilled ones. However, the vocal Call of Duty community hates the system, wants it removed and do not hesitate to let developers know about it on a daily basis.
It turns out the system actually offers significant benefits for the companies and games implementing it. As a result, it seems clear that Skill-Based Matchmaking is here to stay. Finally a throwback to the most glorious days of the franchise and a game I was excited to play after not having touched a Call of Duty game since Black Ops 2 and besides the great remaster of CoD4, Modern Warfare Remastered.
However, when it got released and I played it, something felt off. I felt it immediately too. But in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare , despite my best efforts, it only averages 0. It even fell as low as 0.
